Event Description:

This presentation will focus on navigating the transition to college among students with mental health challenges from an advocacy perspective. While the focus of the presentation is on supporting students with mental health conditions, this information is  relevant to all current and hopeful college students. This session will provide information in the following areas:


  • Student rights and responsibilities under the ADA and Section 504

  • Breaking down the accommodations process

  • The role of campus engagement in student success and well-being


About the Speaker:

  • Kyra Baker-Short (she/her) is a supported education and mental health inclusion specialist. She is a research associate with the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities, where she has developed interventions for research studies focused on increasing community inclusion and participation among individuals with significant mental health challenges. Kyra has extensive experience supporting young adults (18-30) with mental health conditions to identify and achieve their goals related to higher education, leisure and recreation, and friendship development. As the owner of KBS Coaching & Consulting, she provides individualized supported education coaching to college students in the areas of self-advocacy, academic achievement, interpersonal relationships, and campus engagement. Kyra has been featured as a presenter with The Institute for Best Practices, University of North Carolina Center for Excellence in Community Mental Health; Oregon Supported Employment Center for Excellence Supported Education Conference; Oregon Center for Excellence for Assertive Community Treatment Statewide Virtual Conference 2021 (keynote speaker); American Therapeutic Recreation Association 2019 Conference in Reno, NV; and Temple University’s Recreational Therapy Evidence-Based Practice Day
